If you have the money live in Jesmond or the centre, if not then go for the next place you can afford. Don't worry about taxi costs they are all metered and there are plenty licensed cabs around the gay area - Jesmond would be a fiver I would think. Gosforth on the Newcastle side or Low Fell on the Gateshead Free dating site in us and Bath would be fine. My best mate is from Slovakia and he loves Newcastle - probably more so than me: Like a lot of places away from London it is a bit more geared up to 'the night out' between Thursday and Saturday and I would think any after work bars would more likely to be straight - down by the Quayside.
There seem to be a lot of decent restaurants these days at all price points, cuisine and picures. There are a lot of bars these days and my only issue is that they can be all a bit samey - ie crank the music up far too loud far too early: That is changing a bit so there is a bit more mix.
Living in London I find the lack of traffic on the roads great - you can get where u want quickly. The Sage - which is in Gateshead gets a very wide range of music.
